Schiltberger (1381-1440) a native of Munich, had been captured by the Turks in the battle of Nikopolis (1396) at a very young age. He had been taken in Adrinople and later in Kallipolis. Early 1397 he preferred to enter in Ottoman service and visited Bursa (Proussa). He followed Bayazit in his campaigns in Asia Minor and describes the capture of Ikonio in late 1397,of Samsun (Samsounda) in 1398 and of Sivas (Sevastia) and Melitini (Malatya) in 1399.In 1402 he followed Bayazit s army in Ankara battle where he had been captured by the Mongols. After several years in their service in Asia Minor, he escaped finally in, still Byzantine, Constantinople in 1426 and returned the following year in Germany. His unbelievable travel circulated widely in manuscript, around Europe and very early has been blended with fantastic stories which had been published partially, even in the 15th century, in pamphlets. It took several years, in early 19th century, to check all existing manuscripts and reconstruct the original travel account in his authentic version. This has been done in his native city, in Munich. Schiltberger s account provides invaluable information for Constantinople, Thrace and many places in Anatolia. It is surprising that the first English translation of this book appeared as late as 1976, but even this modern translation is very rare. One of the most important medieval travel account for Greece and the Levant. Extremely Rare
