One of the rarest travel to the Levant during 17th century richly illustrated .Electus Zwinner (c.1620-1668) was a Franciscan friar of German-Czech origin who travelled in the Levant in 1657-58.He crossed the Mediterranean to the Holy Land where he spent a year, later he toured to Egypt ,where he visited Cairo and Alexandria .From Jerusalem travelled to Syria and Lebanon ,where he visited Tripoli, Sidon, Damascus, Beirut, Aleppo and Antioche .In his return stayed in Cyprus and toured the island visiting the local Franciscans monasteries ,Famagusta ,Paphos and several monuments (p.640-643).He continued to Rhodos(p.643-48),to Crete(p.648-52) and Zakynthos (p.652-54).The account is not a herbarium or a botanical guide as it might seem from the title, but a comprehensive geographical guide of the eastern Mediterranean and particularly the Holy Land which is supplemented by many copper engraved views and plans of the realities of visited places .Zwinner was the author of all the plates and provided also an accurate detailed plan of contemporary Jerusalem in mid 17th century, actually invaluable ,as we can locate now lost buildings. He travelled three times in the Levant and died in Bethlehem in 1668.Not in Atabey and Blackmer. Very rare, richly illustrated and with fine contemporary binding
