Second book :First and only edition. Text in French and parallel translation in German, complete 20p.Both in very good condition. Castlemain s account provides a yearly account for the events in Crete from 1646 to 1666 and a monthly report on the phase from 1667 to 1668.It has been first published in 1668.Few copies of this German edition include also the famous Scolari map of Crete (Zacharakis 3296),published separately in late 1668 to celebrate the last big naval victory of Venetians under Morosini against the Turkish fleet in Agia Pelagia in autumn 1668 that was the last happy event in the Cretan war. It is one of the most decorative map of Crete ever printed and one of the rarest as the fall of Iraklio few months later caused the disappearance of the map from the market .Seems that several copies of this map may have arrived in Frankfurt in early summer 1669 with the Scolari print erased, to be sold in the famous book and print fair held there .Second travel account is unique .It is an anonymous account from Crete dated 1 December 1668,published separately and saved by pure chance ,as it was bound with the other book. Most of these twenty pages publications perished. It provides a precious and unrecorded contemporary detailed account for the last winter of the siege of Candia (Iraklio) including everyday life details ,such as the cost of food, the places of market etc. Blackmer 1544,Not in Atabey. Extremely rare set.
