Randolph B.:”The Present State of the MOREA called anciently Peloponnesus …together with a description of the city of Athens, islands of Zant,Strafades and Serigo” .London 1686 The almost unobtainable First edition.Small in 4to 19x15cm,early 19 th century over boards, internal fine, very good condition. {together}:[Randolph]:A map of Greece with part of Anatolia .London Senex 1720.Copper engraved loose map 57x49cm, drawn by Randolph (Zacharakis 2879) in a later version(Zacharakis 3330),very good condition. Richard Randolph was a Levantine merchant who resided in the Morea from 1671 to 1679 according his own account .His text is written from the point of view of a merchant rather than of an antiquarian ,and he describes current conditions ,prompted by his obvious economic interests .The Venetian invasion of Morea, in 1685-86, may have given the opportunity to Randolph to write this work which contains also a description of Athens. Both Atabey s (Atabey 1102) and Blackmer s (Blackmer 1385) collections had only the third edition of 1689, which have two maps (Zacharakis 2879 and 2881).According to Blackmer ,in the two earlier editions there were no plates ,but a map had been published separately .It is most probable that they made combinations to order ,as in contemporary Coronelli s works .Some time, in the 18th century or perhaps in the early 19th when the book had been rebound ,the book has been coupled with the relative, separately published, map . The book is complete, as printed .As previously mentioned ,the extra map it is the same map as published separately by Randolph in 1686, in a later edition by Senex . Levantine merchants travel accounts are extremely few and Randolph first edition is Extremely Rare.
