Elliott was a hard traveler. In the 1830s the first steam boats started travel down the Danube. He travelled in 1835 all the way from Vienna to the Black sea, visiting Danube coastal cities and places, then he continued to the Crimea and Constantinople, he stayed quite a long there and provided precious account for the Ottoman capital and the general situation of the Levantine society and economy of his time. This account covers the first volume. Next year he continued to Asia Minor, visiting the Troad, Smyrna, Magnesia, Sardis, Ephesus and several other cities and places in western Anatolia. He mentioned that the Greek prelate of Philadelphia told him that during twelve years he saw only two parties of travelers. Elliott explains the paucity of travelers in Anatolia by the very harsh condition of traveling and that in the contemporary buildings there is nothing to admire. Asia Minor, once the most civilized place in the world, during the 11th century, was in ruins after five centuries of Ottoman rule. He continued to Lycia and provides one of the first detailed accounts for Kastelorizo. Several pages description of Cyprus before reaching Syria and Palestine. A scarce lengthy travel account with precious information for inner Anatolia, Greek islands and Cyprus. Atabey 393,Blackmer 541.
