Joseph Russegger (1802-1863) was a famous Austrian Geologist .He travelled in Greece and the Levant in his first mission in 1836.Later he did several other trips to Egypt, Soudan and other countries .All these different travel accounts have been published separately during several years (from 1841 to 1849) in different volumes. Each volume covers a different travel .In this volume is his first trip, to Greece and around Eastern Mediterranean, Complete. Russegger had been invited by the Greek government to help in the discovery of the mineral resources of the newly independent country .He had visited Corfu and Lefkada before his landing at Patras the 3rd of February of 1836,he continued overland via Korinthos and Loutraki to Athens.A very detailed early description of twenty pages of the new Greek capital follows .Russegger did several trips in the surrounding countryside and had several meetings, but Greece did not have the needed financial means to support a large scale scientific research .Russegger later visited Nafplio where he met several other Greek officials and finally continued to Alexandria where Mehmet Ali could more easily afforded the large expenses of geological missions and surveys .He spent some time in Egypt in a fact finding mission ,visiting also a part of Syria (which was under Egyptian rule).He continued to south east Asia Minor ,practically touring all around Eastern Mediterranean. A very detailed scientific travel account, more than 1.000 pages. Not in Atabey,Blackmer or any other known collection of the Levant. Extremely rare.
