James Bell was a British merchant established in the then independent Circassia, an area in western Caucasus in the Black sea ,and provides invaluable information for the eastern Black sea area ,still not controlled by the Russians. His pro-Turkish and anti-Russian sentiments were shared by many contemporary English .The fall of Circassia just a few years later ,made Bell s fine account one of the very few primary sources available for the contemporary 19th century situation in the eastern Black sea.
