This publication covers a travel in Macedonia, almost completely unexplored then. He had focused at the area of Filipi in eastern Macedonia where ruins where still visible around. On the way he spent two months in Thessaly for topographical studies and had the opportunity to take several manuscripts from monasteries in the Meteora. It was a first, fact finding, mission in Macedonia during several months, mostly to locate the main sites for future excavations (Filipi, Pidna, Amphipolis). He returned later in 1876 and conducted the first excavations in Macedonia. Not in Atabey,Blackmer or any other known collection. Extremely rare
