(16) ff, 215 pages, (8) ff. 1st edition of this translation in French, with the original Latin, of the “Deo Socratis” from the Platonic philosopher Apuleius (c.123 - c.170), composed by the writer and translator Norman Jacques Parrain Des Coutures (1645-1702). This well-known descriptive exposition of Platonic demonology is preceded by a long biographical note on the author of “Cupidon et Psyché”. In a long essay entitled “Remarques”, at the end of the book, the translator justifies his choice of translation and points to the place of the work in the history of philosophy. Original full calf skin binding, one snag to the top crown, a joint split measuring 1 cm, solid hinges, 2 dented corner, spine with raised bands adorned with golden fleurons and title label in garnet morocco; one flaw on the bottom of the second plate, some rare foxing and, speckled edges, bookplate in pen crossed out on the title. Complete. Apart from the defects reported, the copy is in good condition.
