Second edition of these collected lectures or papers of the famous English polymath, mathematician, astronomer, chemist, inventor & experimental photographer Sir John Frederick William Herschel. Includes Herschels involvement in the 1860s with extraterrestrials, involving "life on the Sun and by implication life on all stars." Suggesting also that "comets and planets are probably all inhabited.". Dedicated by Professor W. Saran (?) with handwritten inscription “University of St. Andrew, Natural Philosophy & Law Session 1870 – 1871 / Thomas Meugier (?) past in the examinations on the Lecturer / W. Saran Prof. Nat. Phil. 19 April 1871”. Contemporary binding: full leather with large blind-stamped in gilt “Sigullum Univercitatis Doctorum magistrorum et Scolarium Sancti Andree” of the University of St. Andrew and decorations in gilt on spine, marbled edges.
