Thomas Abel Brimage Spratt was an English vice-admiral, hydrographer, and geologist. He was especially distinguished for his Travels and Researches in Crete (2 vols., 1865), in which he described the physical geography, geology, archaeology and natural history of the island. While surveying the sea, Spratt looked beyond the coasts, visiting and considering the topology, geology, people and settlements of the country, paying also special attention to the remains of the past. Assisted by his very able personnel, enabled him to successfully research the island and produce this detailed account, combining the results and leading to very interesting results along islands geological history and archaeology.
