DORPFELD Wilhelm, "Alt-Ithaka / Ein Beitrag zur Homer-Frage. Studien und Ausgrabungen auf der Insel Leukas-Ithaka". 2 vols, MÜNCHEN-GRÄFELFING, 1927. 1st edition, in 4°, p. 451, with 89 art print inserts and 20 plates. The famous archaeologists, Wilhelm Dörpfeld, book presents the results of his excavations taken place not on Ithaca, as the title indicates, but on the island of Lefkada between the years 1901-1913. The reason why the famous architect of Heinrich Schliemann gave this title to his book is because he believed that Lefkada was the real island of Odysseus, Ithaca. He was convinced not only by the impressive results of his excavations, but also by several passages from the Odyssey, which seemed to describe geographical locations of Lefkada. However, his theory was never accepted. Original green clothed covers, gilt title on front and spine. Slight external wear. Clean and tight inside. Ex libris label on front end papers in both volumes. RARE copy.
