BODENEHR Gabriel Hans Georg, “CORFU”, from “Forces dEurope oder die Merckwurdigste...”, printed in Augslurg, c.1730. Rare plan of Corfu and surrounding lands presenting the improved 18th century fortifications and including a key of 18 main defensive features and built features. The improved walls were planned and built by Johann Matthias von der Schulenburg (1661-1747), a German mercenary in the service of the Venetians. Extended text along the right and left edges of the map referring to the recent history of the island from the 1537 Siege of Corfu by the Ottoman Turks led by Hayreddin Barbarossa to the unsuccessful Turkish siege of 1716, where 8,000 Corfu defenders under the commands of Matthias von der Schulenburg, succeeded against the Ottoman army of 33,000 landed on Corfu and laid siege to the city. The Ottomans withdrew in August 1716. The name of Matthias von der Schulenburg is noted in the text framing the map. Gabriel Hans Georg BODENEHR was an Engraver and mapmaker of Augsburg, from a family dynasty of engravers and publishers. Son of Johann Georg Bodenehr (1631-1704). In 1717 the family took over the Augsburg publishing house of Stridbeck. His main work is the “Atlas Curieux”, published in 1704. Map dim.23x15cm.
