Αρχαία Έφεσος – Ancient Ephesus, 1867. A very rare stereoscopic photograph depicting the archaeological site before the first excavations that started in 1869. Explanatory text on the back, emphasizing the atmosphere of isolation and abandonment, and the contrast to the glorious past. A group of most probably early visitors of the site, is depicted, riding horses and donkeys and some of them holding umbrellas for sun protection. Printed text on front "Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1867, by WM. E. James... New York". Very Rare.
