Fine dark impression of Louis Renards remarkable sea chart of the Eastern Mediterranean. Centered on Greece, it extends from Sardinia and Corsica to Cyprus and the Holy Land. Embellished with a fine large allegorical cartouche, 2 compass roses, sea monsters, sailing ships and a key of 111 ports and islands (many of the Aegean). The map was first issued by De Wit c.1680. After De Wit’s death, the plates were acquired by Louis Renard, who substantially revised many the charts and published them in 1715. It became a popular sea atlas amongst Dutch mariners, and was re-issued in 1739, 1745 and in various editions up until 1802. Contemporary hand-colouring.
