The FIRST LARGE FORMAT MAP of the so-called SACRED GEOGRAPHY.

Early, beautifully full hand-coloured, first state of this splendid map depicting the travels of St. Paul throughout the Eastern Mediterranean based on various sources.Dim. 50x36cm, with fullmargins. Centered in the Aegean.

The title cartouche is flanked by two Biblical views including the shipwreck of the Apostle Paul at Malta. At the bottom is a verse of scripture from St. Pauls letters (Corinthians, 2:5). The Mediterranean Sea is highlighted with a pair of sea monsters and sailing ships.

Latin text on verso. Few brown spots, on small pin-hole, strip of paper on reverse reinforcing middle-fold, small strip of self-adhesive tape on reverse on upper part of middle-fold.
