WEIGEL Christoph, "Corcyrae Insulae vulgo Corfu planities unacum parte Greciae", Printed only twice in 1720 & 1755. Rare copper plate map of Corfu accompanied by a bird’s eye view of the town and port, dim.35x31cm. COMMEMORATING THE UNSUCCESFUL TURKISH SIEGE OF 1716, where 8,000 Corfu defenders under the commands of Matthias von der Schulenburg, succeeded against the Ottoman army of 33,000 landed on Corfu and laid siege to the city. The Ottomans withdrew in August 1716. The title cartouche supports this interpretation depicting the Venetian Lion holding a sword above Ottoman captives, while on the background the Ottoman army retreats before the Corfu fortifications. The bird-eye view of Corfu presents many similarities to the one issued by M. Merian in the mid 17th century. Contemporary partly hand-coloured. Strong impression in Excellent condition. Zacharakis 3664.
