DONCKER Henrdick, “Pas Kaert van tOostelycke deel Der Middelandsche Zee…”, from “De Zee-Atlas…”, 1659-1672. Copper plate map dim. 51x41cm, with outline hand-colouring Impressive chart of the Eastern Mediterranean centered on Greece, extending from Italy to Cyprus and the Holy Land. It is based on the Janssonius / Hondius influential map “Pascaarte van’t Oostelyckste deel vande Middelandsche…” first issued in 1638 and adopted by many cartographers of the 17th century. The map provides rich information, pointing 500 coastal place-names, and naming 111 islands in a key, on the middle-top part of the map. The sea is filled with a dense network of rhumb lines with 11 centers, two compass roses and an elaborate title-cartouche presenting two full-length men mariners with an angel between them, all holding nautical instruments and papal crosses. Light paper soiling; spotting; printers creases; tear professionally repaired with paper addition on lower part of middle-fold. A wonderful Rare Dutch Sea Chart of the Eastern Mediterranean. Zacharakis 1396.
