HOPE Thomas, ANASTASE, ou Mémoires dun Grec: écrits à la fin du XVIIIe siècle; Traduits de lAnglais par lauteur de Londres en 1819 / Tome Deuxieme. Paris: Gide & H. Nicolle, 1820. 1st edition, 1 out of 2 volumes, in 8vo, p.525+[14+4, ed. catalogue]. The author, a Dutch and British merchant banker, author, philosopher and art collector, at early age, he began a long journey in Greece, Turkey and throughout the Mediterranean basin, which lasted 8 years (1787-1795). In this Philhellene novel, he was able to combine fiction with descriptions of reality and the narration of contemporary historical events, which was quite rare at that time. Published without an authors name, it was once attributed to Lord Byron. Softcover, rather worn externally. Clean and quite tight inside, missing the folding map at the end.
