DANCKERTS J., “Peloponnesus Hodie Moreae Regnum”, 1680-1700. Large copper plate map (59x51cm), with full hand-colouring. A masterpiece of artistry to the victory of the Venetians and the Christians against the Ottomans and the recovery of the Morea, reflected on the title cartouche that depicts the Venetian Lion of St. Marc holding a sword and a gospel book over the heads of a group of enslaved Ottoman soldiers. The map presents the contemporary administration divisions of the Peloponnese and is very rich in contemporary toponyms, while the main settlements and castles are highlighted. Few brown spots and a marginal short tear, covered with a small contemporary paper strip on verso. Zacharakis 1281.
