[American Philhellenism – Cretan Revolution] HOWE Samuel Gridley, “The Cretan refugees and their American helpers: A statement addressed to the contributors for the relief of Cretan refugees”, Boston, Lee and Shepard, 1868. 8vo, pp.64, including a frontispiece map of Crete presenting the distribution of Christians and Muslims in the island, missing the photograph of the Cretan refugees in Athens between pp.32 & 33. Based in Boston, the philhellene Doctor Samuel G. Howe, along with the contribution of the American Consul W. J. Stillman (famous also for his aesthetically fine photographs of the Acropolis), leaded this Cretan-aid movement, raised $ 37,000 and sent to Crete large quantities of clothing. The current publication is addressed to the American public and the American donators that contributed to the Cretan people after the outbreak of the Cretan Revolt and the following Ottoman atrocities. It starts with a short historical introductory text leading to the Cretan Revolution of 1866, it presents first-hand information, stated in the form of letters from the members of the American Missionaries in Crete. It also presents letters to and from the Central Cretan Committee in Athens and articles published in that period. In the end, 12 pages of the American subscribers to the Cretan Fund along with the amounts offered. Original publisher’s binding. Light occasional spotting. Rare.
