STANHOPE Colonel Leicester, “GREECE in 1823 and 1824: being a series of letters and other documents on the Greek revolution written during a visit to that country / by the honourable Colonel Leicester Stanhope ; illustrated with several curious fac similies ; to which is added the life of Mustapha Ali”, Printed for Sherwood, Jones & co. London, 1824. In 8vo, p. xiii+368+5 facsimiles. Brightly hand-tinted frontispiece of Mustapha Ali and with six facsimilies of documents at rear (five folding and one double-page integral). Col. Stanhope was dispatched as a representative of the London Greek Committee to offer assistance, monetary and otherwise, to the Greeks in setting up a stable constitutional government after the revolution. His personality and attitudes toward the Greeks did not manage to become desirable, both by the leaders of the eastern and western regions of the country. He left without achieving the Committees goals and without dispersing any of the monies earmarked for the mission. (Interestingly, he sailed home on the same ship which carried the body of Lord Byron). In contemporary half leather binding (black leathered spine and corners), title in gilt over spine, thick carton boards; slight wear. Text block is firm, pages clean and tight, apart from scarce foxing; gold edge pages. Ex libris stamp on endpaper. Scarce and Very Good copy.
