[Greco-Turkish War 1919-1922 / Μικρασιατική Εκστρατεία] Captain Fazil Bey, along with Halide Edip Adıvar in aviator uniforms, photographed in front of a Breguet 14 in Asia Minor c.1920. Original silver-printed photograph dim. 16,5 x 11 cm. The first man on the right is the legendary Turkish Captain pilot Fazil Bey. Trained in England from 1912, he took active part in the 2nd Balkan Wars, and fought in all the fields of the 1st World War, the Dardanelles, Palestine & Iraq. He was probably the most active Turkish pilot during the Asia Minor campaign and the Turkish war of independence. Halide Edip Adıvar was a Turkish novelist, nationalist, kemalist and political leader for womens rights. During the Greco-Turkish War (1919-1922) she was granted the ranks of first corporal and then sergeant in the nationalist army, extensively traveling to the fronts. Here she is presented dressed in aviator uniforms, although it is not recorded that she had any airplane flying experience. Extremely rare photograph.
