The “Discourse on Homer” was very controversial and attracted the wrath of the great philologist Madame Dacier. Having become one of the key pieces in the quarrel between the Ancients and the Moderns, the author in fact became the leader of the Moderns. Contemporary full calf binding, red labelled spine with title in gilt, 5 nerves, floral motifs; some shelf wear and soiling, spine rubbed, corners bumped, hinges cracked, boards with stains. Colored edges rather faded, inside textblock age-toned dark; title vignette, dark stain on down right, visible at first pages, along with frontispiece (restored). Initials and some headbands. Overall Good copy.
