Alexander Stuart Murray was a Scottish archaeologist, known for his archaeological investigations on Cyprus, that served as the keeper of Greek and Roman antiquities of the British Museum. This work, based on his lectures to the Royal Academy, is a deep investigation along the Parthenon marbles. It includes among other a very large folding plate dim. 187 x 23 cm (!) of all the four sides the Parthenon frieze as it was exhibited in the British Museum accompanied by drawings of J. Carrey originally designed in 1674 and depicting parts of the frieze before their destruction by Morozini’s bombardment. Original blind-stamped in gilt cloth with leather spine. External soiling and rubbing, interior with very light toning, overall a very good copy.
