Written by the reputable in travel books American writer Nathaniel Parker Willis, this travelogue include vivid descriptions from various places of Italy (Elba, Piombino, Porto Ferrajo, Naples, Herculaneum, Pompeii, Sicilυ, Palermo, Trieste), The Adriatic, Albania, Austria (Gratz, Vienna), Greece (Corfu, Paxoi, Lefcada, Navarino, Methoni, Kythira, Athens, Piraeus Mytilene), Turkey (Dardanelles, the Sea of Marmara, Gallipoli, Constantinople), Asia Minor and Smyrna. The author is especially attracted by the everyday facts and life habits of the people at the visiting places, creating a very vivid picture of the places he visits.
