DEMONT Louis, GARSTON Edgar (trnsl.), “Journal of the visit of Her Majesty the Queen, to Tunis, Greece, and Palestine”, London, T. and J. Allman, 1821. 8vo, pp.xxiv, 84. The translator of the work, Edgar Garston was serving as Caroline’s interpreter at her divorce trial. As noted in the introduction, the current work is based on a Demont’s manuscript, found by Garston in the possession of a lady in Demont’s home village in Switzerland. Queen Caroline traveled in Greece and the Levant between 1814 and 1816. Her troubled marriage with King George had gained much public interest and the current publication is printed amidst this blaze of publicity. The current edition is different from the illustrated and more extended one printed the same year under the title “Voyages and travels of Her Majesty…”. Full contemporary leather, rubbed. Missing upper part (margins) of the title page, ex libris cachet to front end-paper. Creased the title page, tear covered on last sheet, occasional spotting. Not in Blackmer. Very Rare.
