Alessandro Braccio [...] Nuouamente tradotti di greco in italiano dal sig. Girolamo Ruscelli, In Venetia, appresso Camillo Franceschini, 1575. P. 88 (double pages). Appian of Alexandria (Αππιανὸς Αλεξανδρεύς) was a Greek historian (b. Alexandria c. AD 95); at the time of Hadrian he had Roman citizenship in Rome, under Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus he was a tax attorney. Around 160 he composed a Roman History ("Ρωμαϊκά"), which, with other minor works relating to the imperial age, constituted a corpus of 24 books, including the history of Rome from its foundation to the death of Trajan. In addition to extracts made in the Byzantine age, 11 books are preserved (Iberian War, Hannibal War, Libyan War, the Illyrian War etc.). Appianus had many sources at his disposal, but he frequently fell into errors. For some periods, however, his work is a precious document. ITALIAN TRANSLATION OF THE ONLY EXISTING HISTORICAL DESCRIPTION OF THIS PERIOD OF ANCIENT ROME. Two books (out of three) with their own title page, bound in one, consist a unique description of these important decades of Roman history. The first edition of this (1519) is the first to be translated into a modern language (Italian). The work of Appiano had the merit of changing the usual annalistic structure of Roman historiography, dividing it systematically by topics.
