GELL William Sir, “The Itinerary of Greece: With a Commentary on Pausanias and Strabo and an Account of the Monuments of Antiquity at Present Existing in that Country compiled in the years MDCCI : II : V : VI”, London, Trayne, 1810.

First and only edition. 4to, pp. [4], xvii, 171, [8]. COMPLETE including an engraved title and 27 aquatint and copper engraved plates, of which 4 folding and one double-page.

This rare edition contains Gell’s observations of the Argolid, visited by the author in 1801-2 & 1805-6 with special focus on Mycenae archaeological site. The edition includes also includes two maps of the Argolis & the Mycenae.  Sir William Gell (1777–1836) was a British traveller, archaeologist and topographer. He visited Greece several times as an envoy of the British government.

Fine contemporary full calf. Covers and spine decorated with blind and gilt tooled fleuron motifs, all edges marbled. Ex-libris label “Βιβλιοθήκη Σπ. Λοβέρδου” in gilt. External rubbing along edges, corners and joints, spotting inside.
