The COMPLETE French edition bound with the second part of the First edition (in German) including all the 71 plates printed for this work. 4to, pp. vi, 98 + 99-178. Horner’s “Bilder des Greichischen Alterthums” was first issued in German (Zurich, 1823) including 71 plates (72 numbered with pl.14 & 15 used for a single plate). The French translation started to be issued a year later and was planned to be concluded in 4 livraisons. Finally only the first two were printed including the first 35 plates. In the current copy the rest of the plates - along with the corresponding text - are added from the German edition. “Both the German and French versions are scarce” (Blackmer). The Swiss art historian and writer Johann Jakob Horner possessed a deep knowledge of art history and his work received international recognition. The present edition is a collection of articles dealing with various aspects of the ancient Greek life, each one accompanied by plates mainly taken from previous works of J. Stuart and N. Revett, W. M. Leake, W. Gell, C.R. Cockerell, Choiseul-Gouffier. Later leather spine, marbled thick carton covers, rubbed, chipped parts of the marbling paper coating.
