Caspar Rad, Siege of Belgrade (August 1717), copper plate c. 1730.

An Extremely Rare plan, possibly separate printed c.1730, by the based in Augsburg publisher Caspar Rad, presenting the formation of the Ottoman army, during the Siege of Belgrade (August 1717). The huge ottoman army, led by Hacı Halil Pasha has arrived for the support of the Ottoman defenders of Belgrade, caging the Austrian troops between the fortress and the ottoman army.

The map includes a fine engraving (13.5x10cm) on the left lower corner depicting a vivid war scene where two figures on horses are prominent on the two edges, probably depicting the two leaders of the opponent armies Eugene of Savoy and Hacı Halil Pasha. On the right lower corner, a title cartouche is framing text in German “Eigentliche Vorstellung der Turckische Schlacht Ordnung, wie solche sich beij Adrianopel dem Gros Sultan gezeigt und hiemit zeigenwollen wie sie die Teutschen Uberwinden und vernichten wolten”. On the center, thick text in German referring to the heroic victory of the Christian armies against the Turks in strong lyrical style. The publisher is mentioned on the lower right edge “Zufinden beij Caspar Rad neben dem Barfüser Thor”.

Copper engraving 48x37.5 cm on sheet 56.5x45.5cm with hand-colouring. The whole sheet glued on thick carton, spotting throughout.

Not tracked in any public library or collection.
