GREECE: Silver or silvered commemorative medal for the Olympics 1896 In Athens. The Panathenaic Stadium surrounded by the legend "ΠΑΝΑΘΗΝΑΙΚΟΝ ΣΤΑΔΙΟΝ / ΗΡΩΔΗΣ - ΑΒΕΡΩΦ / ΕΝ ΑΘΗΝΑΙΣ" and the inscriptions "ΝΗΣΙΩΤΗΣ" at left and "ΧΡΥΣΟΧΟΟΣ" at right below the stadium on obverse. Olive wreath surrounded by the legend "ΟΛΥΜΠΙΑΚΟΙ ΑΓΩΝΕΣ / 776πΧ 1896" on reverse. Herod and Averof were the financiers of the construction of the Stadium. Struck by Nisiotis (Athens). Diameter: 30mm. Weight: 8,6gr. (Chase# 761). Fine.
